Music

Kimberworth CPS is a Music Mark school recognising our commitment to a broad and balanced curriculum and the value that we place on music.

In KS1 and KS2 we use the Charanga scheme to teach the National Curriculum for Music. In each unit of work the children will take part in different strands of music: listening and appraising; creating and exploring and singing and performing.

We have chosen this scheme because:

It is based on a spiral curriculum

The units for key stages 1 and 2 are based on a spiral curriculum. Charanga Musical School Units of Work enable children to understand musical concepts through a repetition-based approach to learning. Learning about the same musical concept through different musical activities enables a more secure, deeper learning and mastery of musical skills. Over time, children can both develop new musical skills and concepts, and re-visit established musical skills and concepts. Repeating a musical skill doesn’t necessarily mean their progress is slowing down or their development is moving backwards! It’s just shifting within the spiral.

It provides progression of knowledge and skills

A clear progression of knowledge and skills in listening and appraising, singing, playing, improvisation, composition and performance is identified and planned for in each year group. A clear sequence of key vocabulary to teach allows the children to understand and discuss their learning as musicians.

In addition to whole class teaching of the Charanga Scheme, all children in Year 5 also learn to play a musical instrument. The current class have weekly drumming lessons with a teacher from the Rotherham Music Service

Children in Year 3 and 4 have a weekly singing lesson with the Director of Music at St Pauls, Masbrough. He also leads a school choir who take part in One Voice and Carols at the Minster.
